Ah, now this is an interesting & fun photo to look at!
As Wikipedia explains, these guys are the only living kin of the once feared Phorusrhacids (a.k.a. 'Terror Birds' ) of South America. These animals were among the top predators of South American until the land bridge was formed linking North America with it's southern sister continent. When this happened, fauna from both continents migrated between land masses. (southern U.S.'s signature armadillos are one such relic from this event. Their roots are found in S.America.)
Along with these giant predatory birds were large carnivorous marsupials analogous to those of Australia. However, while both carnivorous mammals & herbivorous mammals in Australia were marsupial, South America's herbivores were not marsupials but instead placental ungulates (hoofed mammals).
I don't know if it's been officially decided what killed off these large birds. Some speculate competition with placental carnivores may have killed of the group, but while I feel it had an impact, I'm slightly dubious it would have been what actually erased them from existence. [link]

Wow, that's really really interesting, thank you! A pity you can't name comments for DDs. Who'd have thought that this guy would once have chewed my leg off?
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
