Backstitch always gives a nice finish, i think but i do use running to ;)

I think I'll be sticking with backstitch for now. It's easier to cast on with.

I use backstitch for outlines, double running for almost everything else. The reason is that with an outline, there is a thickness of thread between the back of the backstitch and the front of the piece. A backstitch casts a visible shadow around itself if you are stitching on evenweave, unless it is obscured by other stitches.

I use a continental cross stitch, instead of the standard one. It uses 1/6th more thread, but prevents pulling, and makes it easier to hide the beginnings and ends of the threads. It is thick, and obscures the "backstitch shadow" very well.
